Electronics is a branch of electrical engineering that deals with the flow of electrons through vacuum tubes or semiconductor devices. It usually deals with small scale electronic devices like computers, ICs etc. In 1904, John Ambrose Fleming invented a completely closed glass vacuum tube with two electrodes and was able to send a unidirectional current through it. So it can be said that electronics started from that time.
Electronic engineering mainly deals with the design and testing of electronic circuits. Electronic circuits are generally made up of resistors, capacitors, inductors, diodes etc. to perform a specific function. An example of an electronic circuit is a radio tuner that helps to tune out all but the desired radio stations.
Before World War II, electronics engineering was known as radio engineering or wireless engineering. Its scope of work was then limited to radar, commercial radio and early television. After World War II, when the development of consumer or user-centered equipment began, this branch of engineering began to expand to include modern televisions, audio systems, computers, and microprocessors. From the mid-fifties the name wireless engineering gradually changed to electronics by the end of the decade.
Before the invention of the integrated circuit (IC) in 1959, electronic circuits were made of large individual components. Circuits made up of these bulky components took up a lot of space and required a lot of power to run them. The speed of these parts was also very low. An integrated circuit or IC, on the other hand, consists of numerous (often 100,000 or more than a million) tiny electronic components, most of which are made up of transistors. Integrated circuits are made by combining these components on a tiny penny-sized silicon chip or chip.
