Listen to this article

Good governance requires transparency and accountability. As a result of the introduction of digital systems, it is possible to ensure the transparency and accountability of government systems in addition to making the government systems modern and up-to-date. As a result, the harassment and embarrassment of the citizens ended and the path to good governance in the country was paved. E-Governance is the use of electronic or digital systems in governance systems and processes.

There was a time when collecting public examination results was a matter of irony for the examinees and their parents. It was especially difficult for those living in villages far from major cities. Just two-decade ago, many would not know their results even seven days after the declaration of SSC or HSC results. But now the result is known through internet and mobile phone SMS as soon as the result is released. As a result, the irony of knowing the result is over.

Another example of e-governance in the field of education is the facility of mobile phone application for admission to higher education institutions. For example, earlier in Jasher district, if a student wanted to get admission in Shahjalal University of Science and Technology in Sylhet, he had to complete many tasks. For this, he or his representative had to go to Sylhet once to collect the admission application form and then submit the application form again. At present this application can be done on mobile phone only. As a result, aspirants do not have to travel from city to city to collect and submit the admission application form.

District e-service center has been launched to get all the services of the District Commissioner’s office in a short time, at low cost and hassle-free. As a result, what used to take 2/3 weeks to get a service is now available in just 2-5 days. Not only this, digitization of information reduces decision making time. In addition to increasing transparency and accountability in providing services, the capacity of the concerned department in providing copies of various documents, papers etc. has also increased a lot. Another example of civil distress is the payment of utility bills. The traditional method of paying electricity, gas, water etc. bills is very time consuming and painful, in some cases a citizen has to spend an entire working day in paying the electricity bill. But currently this bill can be paid through mobile phone or online. Not just electricity, Water and gas bills can also now be paid online and on mobile phones. The core of governance is to improve the quality of life of citizens and keep them free from harassment. Any activity can be done 24 hours a day 365 days through e-governance such as ATM services, Mobile banking, information services etc. As a result, citizens can avail services at their convenient time.

On the other hand, the introduction of e-governance has increased the inter-connection between the government departments and the efficiency of the staff has also increased. As a result, faster service delivery is possible. E-governance has been introduced in Bangladesh for several years. E-governance is yet to be introduced in some cases. If e-governance is introduced in all areas, the country will go a long way towards good governance.
