Islam is an Arabic word. The literal meaning is to obey, to surrender, to follow the path of peace, etc. Islam is obedience to Allah Ta’ala and Rasool (PBUH) in a practical sense. In terms of Shari’ah, Islam is defined as believing sincerely in Allah Ta’ala and fully surrendering to Him, obeying all His commands and prohibitions without hesitation and living according to His laws and the way shown by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
In a hadith, the Prophet (PBUH) has beautifully presented the main identity of Islam. He said – “Islam is – you will bear witness that there is no god but Allah. And Muhammad (pbuh), the Messenger of Allah, will perform Salat, pay Zakat, observe the fast of Ramadan and perform Hajj to Baitullah if he is able.” (Bukhari and Muslim) Allah Ta’ala has sent many orders and prohibitions and rules for the guidance of mankind throughout the ages. These commands and prohibitions have been given as Shariah. Islam is the latest and most complete form of Shariat. It is the last and best life plan directed to mankind. Allah Ta’ala says about this “Surely Islam is the only religion or way of life approved by Allah.” (Surah Al-Imran, verse 19)
So Islam is a religion acceptable to Allah Ta’ala. And one who leads his life according to Islam is called a Muslim or Muslim. Introduction to Islam Islam is the religion or way of life introduced by Allah Ta’ala. It is a special blessing of Allah Ta’ala to mankind. It is a complete lifestyle. It provides complete solutions to all issues and problems of human life. Allah Ta’ala says, “Today I have perfected your religion for you; And completed My favor upon you and appointed Islam as your way of life.” (Surat al-Almaida, verse 3)
Islam provides proper guidance for all human activities from birth to death. Personal, familial, social, cultural, economic, political and international issues are properly described in Islam. There is even a description of the life after death or the state of the afterlife in Islam. So there is no alternative to Islam to lead a fair and beautiful life. The Islamic word aun (silmun) is derived from the root, silmun meaning peace. Islam guides people to the path of peace. By following Islamic rules, people can enjoy a peaceful life in this world and in the hereafter. This is why Islam is called the religion of peace.
Islam is universal religion. It is not limited to any time, region or nation. He is the name of other religions. All are done in the name of promoters, propagators, followers or nations of religions. But Islam is a universal religion. Because it is not named after anyone. Rather, peace through obedience to Allah and His Messenger. It is named Islam for the purpose of leading a life on the path.
